Excerpts
These excerpts will give you a feel for the story, introduce you to a few of its main characters, and answer some of the questions you may have. For instance, if you're wondering, "Who was Joe Brown, and why did they
name a town after him?" -- see Excerpt 1. It's from Chapter 12, "The Major's Story," and features portions of the text from pages 102 through 106.
While Joseph Renshaw Brown was a famous figure in early Minnesota history, some of the characters in this story are fictional. In Excerpt 2 (from Ch. 1, "An Introduction," pp. 5-6) you'll meet the narrator's friend,
Spook, and learn how he got his name.
In Excerpt 3 (also from Ch. 1, pp. 7-8), you'll cross paths with Big Ahl -- and quickly see why he's known as "the meanest Swede in the territory." These two excerpts should give
you a good feel for the "folksy" style of the tale. (They come back-to-back in the story, so you might want to read them in order, since one sets up the other.)
Last but not least, for those who are asking, "What in the world would Sherlock Holmes be doing in the tiny frontier town of Brown's Valley, Minnesota, In November of 1886?" -- the answer can be found in Excerpt 4
(from Ch. 2, "Surprise, Surprise," pp. 16-17). We would love to give you more, but since the book is a mystery, we have to be careful not to spoil any of the surprises. Enjoy!
Excerpt 1: Joe Brown
Excerpt 2: Spook
Excerpt 3: Big Ahl
Excerpt 4: The Stranger
